Species Spotlight: Rockfish

October 19, 2026

Rockfish are among anglers favorite fish to catch in Alaska. Our waters carry dozens of varieties of rockfish but we commonly catch about 15 or so types on our trips. The most common of rockfish that are caught are pelagic ones like Black Rockfish & Dusky Rockfish.

These pelagic species are faster growing, generally reaching their maximum size in 5-8 years. Because of this, fish and game allows anglers to keep more of these types of rockfish. The other classification of rockfish species are grouped in the nonpelagic category. Some of the typical nonpelagic rockfish we catch on our trips are China, Quillback, Tiger, Canary, and Yellow Eye Rockfish. Nonpelagic rockfish are much slower growers, with some taking decades to reach their full size and some living over 100 years! Yellow Eye are the largest rockfish we catch with reaching sizes over 20+ pounds!
