Species Spotlight: Pacific Cod
June 18, 2026
Fisherman’s gold, Pacific Cod is some of the best table fare that the Gulf of Alaska has to offer! On average they typically grow 2-3 feet long and weigh 8-20 pounds. P-Cod are primarily schooling fish living near the ocean floor where they scavenge for food such as herring, capelin, crabs, shrimp, and other small invertebrates. They grow relatively quickly, reaching a harvestable size in 3-4 years. They spawn in the winter time, and females can release millions of eggs in a single season. The eggs will float near the surface before the larvae hatches.
Pacific Cod is highly sought after in the fish market due to its mild flavor and flaky white meat. It was of the most commercially caught fish in the world, and its most popularly prepared as the classic staple “Fish N Chips” dish. P-Cod can be caught on our full day halibut trips as they too hang out near the bottom with cod. Come take a shot at catching some Gulf of Alaska Gold with us!
